U.S. passport fees
Most people pay two separate fees: one to the State Department and, for first-time and child applications, a $35 acceptance fee to the facility.
| Application | Form | Routine (4–6 wks) | Expedited (2–3 wks) |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time adult passport book | DS-11 | $165 | $225 |
| Adult renewal, passport book | DS-82 | $130 | $190 |
| Child under 16, passport book | DS-11 | $135 | $195 |
| First-time adult passport card | DS-11 | $65 | n/a* |
Totals include the $130 application fee and $35 acceptance fee where it applies, plus the $60 expedite fee in the last column. Optional 1–2 day return delivery costs extra. *Passport cards are mailed by first-class mail. Always confirm current fees on the State Department fee page.
How to pay
The State Department fee is paid by check or money order when applying in person or by mail (card for online renewals). The acceptance facility collects its $35 fee separately and sets its own payment methods.
Extra costs to plan for
Passport photos (if you don't take your own), 1–2 day return delivery, and private expediter fees if you use one. Expediter fees are not set by the government.
